On Tuesday, 11th of August, Kerang Christian College entered three teams to compete in the Western Christian Schools Sports Association (WCSSA) Basketball Tournament in Geelong.
A Year 9/10 Boys team, Year 9/10 Girls team and one VCE Mixed team represented the College. All teams experienced some success with the Year 9/10 Boys having some close matches and the VCE team going undefeated for the whole tournament; however, were defeated in the Grand Final and placed second overall.
The Kerang Christian College Year 9/10 girls basketball team were the surprise. A team consisting of three Year 7 girls, one Year 8 and two Year 10 girls combined for the first time to take on some fearsome competition.
The team posted some good wins throughout the tournament, with only one loss by a large margin. The opposing team, Creek Street Christian College, was undefeated for the day and the girls faced them in the Grand Final.
At half time, the Kerang Christian College team had a strong five point lead with the scores 10-5. Momentum shifted in the second half and soon the score was 10-13. With 90 seconds on the clock, the coach, Miss Georgina Beach, called time out.
The scores were close at 15-18. Some scrappy play and a quick goal to Kerang put the girls at 17-18. Fouls were an issue and with 10 seconds on the clock the other team had two foul shots. Both shots missed and with the clock counting down fast Kerang Christian College’s Bella Ayre rebounded the ball above two Creek Street Christian College players. She dribbled skillfully down the court, weaving around the opposition. With less than two seconds on the clock, she took a shot and it went in just before the buzzer. Supporters of the girls were delighted!
“What a fantastic effort for a group of students who hadn’t played together in a team before,” highlighted Miss Georgina Beach. “The atmosphere during the final was electric and a nail biter to the end. It was fantastic to come from behind for a victory against last year’s champions. Well done girls!”
The WCSSA provides an opportunity for students at Kerang Christian College to compete against Christian schools from Ballarat, Melbourne, Bendigo, Warnambool and Geelong. The win builds on the historic win by the Year 9/10 boys who made school history last year by winning the College’s first ever sport title as a Secondary School. Earlier in the year, the College also won the Mixed VCE Netball title at the WCSSA tournament in Bendigo.
