This week the Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students sat the NAPLAN tests. These tests were assessing student performance in spelling, grammar and punctuation as well as creative writing skills. To be able to assess levels of performance the students need to be asked questions that are at their standard but also questions that are above and well above their standard. Consequently most students will be unable to answer the high end questions, and this unfortunately is the way the Year 12 exams are structured as well.
It is very important to stress to students that their worth is not determined by any performance on a particular exam or an ATAR for a tertiary entrance rank.
As the Psalmist says in Psalm 139:13-17
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
How amazing that even before birth God knew us and the days allotted to our lives. We all are God’s creation and worth so much that Jesus came to earth for us died and was raised to life. We are valuable because we are God’s creation and He loves us! As Christians and a Christian School this is the message we want to give to our students and the community around us!
To me the purpose of these tests is not to see who is best but rather whether each student has improved from where they were two years ago and is that improvement appropriate for the time they have spent at school. If the answer is yes then as educators and parents we should be satisfied. Always we seek to encourage our students to be the best they can be at whatever they do and I am sure that as parents you would agree!
As we reflect on the above verse, we are also reminded of our mothers. Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums out there! Your worth is incalculable to your family in all you do.
